Toby Cat
Practice Clown

Toby started work at Auckland Veterinary Services in 1998.   He came to us as a kitten in trouble, so we rescued him. He was placed in a loving home but found his way back to the clinic after his erratic behavior became too much to handle (he is definitely a nutcase).

Toby lives at the clinic full time and he looks after the boarding cats in the cattery at night. He can be quite inquisitive and loves to spook dogs by boldly smooching around their legs (much to their disgust). He has a very keen sense of behaviour and seems to know which dogs to approach and which ones might not be so welcoming when they enter the clinic.

Toby’s interests are:

  • Tearing opening big bags of premium food so he gets to eat them instead of selling them (especially the really big and expensive bags of food) – that gets a real reaction from the rest of the team.
  • Dipping his feet into humans’ glasses of water and then lick his paw – especially when they aren’t looking! – this is why most of the team now have water bottles – not nearly as much fun
  • Pulling open cat nip and cat nip toys either before they are unpacked for sale, or just right off the shelves when they are ready for sale.
  • Walking over the keyboards or sitting on papers as humans are trying to work, now that’s when they cannot ignore him!

Toby’s best pet tip:

If you stare at someone long enough they will either turn on the tap for you to have a drink or give you a big cuddle.

Mark Simpson
Head Veterinarian BVSc/ Practice Owner

Mark graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 1983. Fresh from his studies Mark started working at Auckland Veterinary Services. Since then Mark has bought into the practice, initially as a partner, and he is now the sole owner of AVS.

Mark lives in Mt Albert with his wife Janette and their two children. Hamish and Rebecca. The four legged family members are Max the Maltese Terrier cross and Rocky the Jack Russell Terrier.

Outside of work Mark enjoys most sports, but has a passion for cycling, both road and mountain biking. He often has weekend trips away to compete in events around New Zealand.

At work Mark enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine and surgery. He performs most of the surgery and has a special interest in canine reproduction. Mark also spends a lot of time on clinic management work.

Mark’s best pet tip:
Prevent a litter, desex your critter.

Nicole Perrott
Head Veterinary Nurse CVn

Nicole started at Auckland Veterinary Services in 1998 after obtaining her certificate in veterinary nursing at Unitec.  She lives close to the clinic in Te Atatu which is handy for the trip to and from work.

Nicole is passionate about her choice of career and enjoys working with the animals.  She says there are good times and bad times like all jobs and as time goes on she has known a lot of patients from their young days and watched them as they age.

Nicole and her partner Brent have two children Brianna, and Curtis.  They both love to visit Nicole at work and see who is boarding in the cattery.  Toby gets big hugs (whether he wants them or not!)

Pets at home are Carli the Australian Terrier Cross, and cats Marmite, Blue and Liquorice who were all abandoned kittens coming through the clinic.

Outside of work Nicole's family all enjoy the outdoors.  She likes to do some running and has completed a couple of half marathons (which she says is most likely her limit)  Nicole also plays Netball and is currently coaching Brianna's school team.  Curtis prefers playing Soccer.

Nicole’s best pet tip:
Feed cats away from the kitchen to avoid tripping over them at meal time.
When walking the dog use a gentle leader as it makes the walk more pleasurable and doesn't pull on your arm.

Andrea Martin
Veterinary Nurse CVn

Andrea started working at Auckland Veterinary Services in March 2004, she qualified for the Certificate in Veterinary Nursing in 2000, and has worked in a few other practices before settling at AVS. She lives just down the road in New Lynn and appreciates not battling with traffic on the way to work.

Andrea lives with husband Keith and their two young sons, Marshall and Fletcher.  The rest of the immediate family include Rusty the independent Tortishell cat, Bond, a handsome special needs cat, and Brooke a pure breed Staffordshire Bull Terrier who is the nut case of the family.

There have been a few foster pets over the years also which included kittens, dogs, a baby hedgehog and several ducklings.

Andrea is a great veterinary nurse who is especially compassionate when animals are in pain or neglected. Andrea also looks after the weight management clinic, which helps clients achieve a healthy weight for their pets.

Her hobbies outside of work include walking the dogs, crafts and reading in the sun before having a nice afternoon nap.

Andrea’s best pet tip:
For a bit of environmental enrichment for dogs throw a handful of doggy biscuits over the lawn so they have to forage for their food.

Georgina Rennie
Veterinary Nurse CVn

Georgina began working at AVS in May 2005.  Georgina studied at Unitec for her Certificate in Veterinary nursing before heading off to the UK at the beginning 1998 to get more work experience. She moved back to New Zealand in 2004.

From the UK she brought her Scottish husband John and their two daughters Julia and Darla. Soon after arriving in NZ they had their third child Zane.

Among the household of little feet there is Rascal, the Griffon Bruxellois, Moose, the Havana Oriental and Patches & Cheeky the Guinea pigs.

Outside of work Georgina pursues her interests in Siamese/Oriental breeding and showing.  She has so far bred three litters under her breeder prefix MeezyPeezy, and is club secretary for The Oriental Shorthair Cat Assoc of NZ.

Georgina’s other interests are wiling the hours away with Facebook games or relaxing with a cuppa and a good book.

At work Georgina is thoroughly enjoying meeting and talking to all our clients and helping them wherever she can.

Georgina’s Best Pet Tip:
Teach your cats to stay inside at night, less neighbourhood cat fights and road accidents due to poor visibility.

Danielle Davis
Veterinary Nurse

Danielle has been with Auckland Veterinary Services since January 2006 starting out as a kennel worker. Since then Danielle has gained her veterinary nursing qualification (2008) and now works with us as a veterinary nurse.

Danielle lives in Glen Eden with her partner Jamie. She is “mum” to Joey, Phlex & Coogee, all kittens that she adopted from the clinic. There is also Cobie the heading dog.

In her spare time she attends motor cross events with Jamie, and regularly visits her Mum & Dad on Waiheke Island.

Danielle’s favorite part of her job is spending time with patients, giving them TLC with lots of cuddles and attention. Danielle is enjoying all aspects of veterinary nursing.

Danielle always has a smile, a sunny & bubbly personality and is a valued team member.

Danielle’s best pet tip:
When grooming out knots from your fluffy cat, apply a little baby talcum powder to the coat. This helps the comb slide through the coat, saves time and reduces the discomfort for the cat during grooming. If in doubt, bring them to the clinic for the nurses to check.

 Caroline Magee
Veterinary Receptionist

Caroline started working at Auckland Veterinary Services in March 2009. She has had a lot of experience in reception work and is enjoying being part of such an interesting industry.
Caroline lives a hop skip and a jump away from the clinic in Western Springs.

Caroline lives with her three teenage children Jack, George and Caitlin. They keep her busy with their many interests including trampolining and swimming. Caroline loves to walk and not long after joining our team beat us all in an AVS walking challenge!

The furry part of the family (other than the teenage boys) are Grace Cat, Timmy and Midnight the cats.

Caroline is great at managing a very busy veterinary reception and having lots of things on the go at once. You will see Caroline here most mornings.

Caroline’s best pet tip:
Mice mostly prefer one area to pee in so to reduce odour from mouse cages, you can provide them with a ‘litter tray’ in that favorite area and change it once or twice daily.

Rosie Snow
Veterinary Nurse

Rosie started working at Auckland Veterinary Services in February 2009 as Kennel Assistant. She completed a year of Vet Nursing study at Unitec in 2009. She comes in once a day to help out with cleaning and tends to our cattery and hospital patients.  She also does a nursing shift at the clinic once a week and on a relief basis.

Rosie lives with her parents, sister, and nephew James. The pet family members are Cleo the furry Abyssinian and Barry, a ginger & white rescue kitten that Rosie hand reared.

In her spare time Rosie enjoys spending time with friends and family, going for walks and is currently looking into another new addition for the family - A puppy.

Rosie's Best Pet Tip:
Try not to let dogs onto the furniture, and always feed them after your dinner rather than before. This helps them to accept their lower position in your 'pack'

Debbie Goulding
Veterinary Nurse DVn

Debbie came to Auckland Veterinary Services in 2005 as a student veterinary nurse for work experience.  After Debbie finished her diploma in Veterinary Nursing she started working part time at AVS.  You will see Debbie at the clinic on Monday mornings.

Debbie lives with her partner in West Auckland and is mum to several cats.

At work Debbie enjoys all aspects of veterinary nursing but also loves to treat the cats in the cattery to a bit of TLC with lots of loves and cuddles, which is always nice to have when they are away from home.

Debbie’s Best Pet Tip:
Cat Scratch pads are great, particularly catnip ones.  Catnip plants are also fun.  They are called ‘catmint’ plants at Garden centres.  Cats love to rub against them so they often don’t last.  If they are left to grow they have a pretty purple flower
